Project Examples

GIS Substation 3D
Station Engineering
RCM completed a high-level conceptual feasibility study and assessment of a GIS substation on site for the Dominion Compton 550/230kV Substation. As part of the package, RCM submitted site layout, general arrangement, building layout and elevations to dominion, with and without GIS. The animation shows the layout of how a GIS substation could be built at Dominion Compton Substation.

Transformer Relocation
Station Engineering, Civil
AEP Greentown 765kV Substation Rebuild;
RCM was tasked with consulting on the design of the relocation of a current transformer (Transformer No. 2) as well as the removal and installation of a new transformer (Transformer No. 3). The animation depicts the safety procedures used as well as the equipment needed for efficient relocation, removal and installation. As part of IDC, stress analysis and pressure boundary analysis were conducted as well.

HICO Interconnection Substation
Station Engineering, Civil
RCM completed station engineering and protection and control for 38kV Gas Insulated Switchgear for Interconnection Substation. This includes Panel to Panel connection, Cap Banks, station design, foundation layout, Gas arrangement and internal connection for VCP and 3-Position. The animation depicts the overall station layout as well as the internals of the panel building showing the panel arrangement.

West Barnstable GIS
Full EPC
RCM was tasked to provide design for physical layouts and installation details of the MVGIS, the control room which includes the Dominion P&C panels, AC Panels, DC Panels, the battery room, and the routing layout of the 52kV, 2300A solid insulated bus runs from the low side of the four (4) transformers to the new MVGIS building. This animation was submitted as part of a conceptual design during the bidding process. It depicts the physical layouts and installation of the MVGIS and was created based on drawings used from another substation, West Barnstable.

Dominion Mackeys Safety
Station Engineering
RCM was engaged by Dominion to perform a full LiDAR scan and 3D modeling of Mackeys Substation in support of a Transmission Mobile contingency installation. The project aimed to address safety concerns related to transformer replacement in a congested substation by visualizing the mobile equipment placement and ensuring proper safety clearances. The initial goal was to provide a general visualization, with potential for higher-detail modeling if required. The video shows the delivery and installation of mobile equipment, highlighting safety clearances during the transformer replacement.

Esperanza Substation
Station, P&C, Civil, Construction, Building Electrical
RCM was tasked with the full EPC of Esperanza station. The scope of work included 3 breaker Ring Bus, expandable to four breakers on a 330′ by 250′ pad with two gates. Install Control Building, and all associated equipment. Install Line Trap on Blessing to Esperanza Line. Terminate fiber from Celanese 138KV Substation. Install (2) 28.8 MVAR Cap Banks which were engineered to be in sync with the project.

Dominion Gainesville
Station Engineering
RCM was tasked with the replacement of transformer bushings at multiple locations. The work comprised of replacing the existing porcelain bushings of Transformer No. 3 with polymer ones, examining the bushing connections for abnormalities and reusing existing connectors and conductors if possible. One of the substations that required bushing replacement, Gainesville, presented with multiple challenges due to the complexity of the overhead lines. RCM provided Dominion Energy with a 3D model and safety clearance simulations of the bushing replacement. The animation depicts how a crane can perform the bushing replacement at Transformer No. 3, highlighting the safety clearances.

Amherst (Eversource Hico)
Station, P&C, Civil, Construction, Building Electrical
RCM was tasked with providing a turnkey engineering solution for the expansion of the 345kV Amherst Substation to support a new STATCOM system capable of supplying ±300MVar of reactive power via a 345/41.7kV transformer, with optional pricing for a 100MVar unit via a 345/27.8kV transformer. The scope included full electrical, protection & control, and civil/structural engineering—covering site layout, 3D modeling, grounding, relay protection, SCADA, and all supporting calculations—along with construction management services such as on-site supervision, project scheduling, document control, and coordination with suppliers and contractors.

Dominion 230kV
Station Engineering
RCM was tasked with the full EPC of Esperanza station. The scope of work included 3 breaker Ring Bus, expandable to four breakers on a 330′ by 250′ pad with two gates. Install Control Building, and all associated equipment. Install Line Trap on Blessing to Esperanza Line. Terminate fiber from Celanese 138KV Substation. Install (2) 28.8 MVAR Cap Banks which were engineered to be in sync with the project.
